Overview

The Center for Student Excellence and Stewardship (CSES) is a Maryland-based nonprofit foundation established to support the academic, personal, and leadership development of students from early childhood through higher education. The Center plays a central role in launching and sustaining Muhammad Preparatory Academy (MPA)—a K–12 leadership-focused private school rooted in faith, scholarship, and community service. As the legal owner of MPA’s land, building, and future campus assets, the Center is dedicated to stewarding long-term educational impact and equity through infrastructure, programs, and funding.

Past Activities

CSES began as an initiative led by a diverse group of leaders, educators, and professionals, seeking to address opportunity gaps facing underrepresented students in Prince George’s County and surrounding communities. In its early stages, the Center focused on strategic planning, community engagement, and institutional design to lay the groundwork for Muhammad Preparatory Academy.

Key milestones to date include:

  • Securing legal and advisory services to establish the foundation as a nonprofit corporation in Maryland.
  • Conducting a market analysis of K–8 private schools within a 15-mile radius of the planned MPA site to assess educational gaps and design a competitive, values-driven academic model.
  • Developing bylaws and governance structures aligned with nonprofit best practices and IRS 501(c)(3) requirements.
  • Organizing early fundraising and donor cultivation efforts, which resulted in multimillion-dollar pledged support for the acquisition of school property.

Present Activities

Currently, CSES is focused on building the institutional and financial infrastructure necessary to launch and sustain Muhammad Preparatory Academy and future student-centered initiatives.

Ongoing activities include:

  • Property Ownership & Facilities Development: CSES is preparing to acquire and hold title to the land and building for Muhammad Preparatory Academy, serving as the school’s long-term steward and asset manager.
  • Compliance & Governance: Finalizing IRS 501(c)(3) exemption status, state charitable registrations, and financial reporting systems to maintain full legal and ethical compliance.
  • Program Development: Designing scholarship criteria and leadership development initiatives for students from K–12 through college, with an emphasis on academic excellence, community engagement, and social responsibility.
  • Community Engagement: Hosting events and information sessions (e.g., the Community Roots & Readiness Series) to build awareness of MPA’s mission and the Center’s role in creating long-term educational impact.

Future Activities

The long-term vision of CSES is to serve as a national model for nonprofit educational stewardship, scholarship support, and student empowerment.

Planned initiatives include:

  • Owning and Managing Educational Property: The Center will own and maintain all land, facilities, and infrastructure associated with Muhammad Preparatory Academy, including future expansions or satellite campuses.
  • Scholarship & Awards Program: Launching the Excellence Awards Fund to provide annual scholarships, merit-based awards, and college support to MPA students and graduates, particularly those pursuing careers in education, leadership, policy, and community development.
  • Mentorship & Leadership Pipeline: Establishing a structured mentorship program that pairs students with educators, community leaders, and professionals across sectors.
  • University & Career Bridge Programs: Partnering with colleges, trade schools, and workforce development organizations to support students’ transitions from high school into postsecondary education and leadership roles.
  • Community Grantmaking: As the foundation grows, CSES plans to offer small grants to other local organizations or educators aligned with its mission to promote student excellence and equity.
